I adore fava beans!  They make a real early season treat, as one of the first spring harvests.  I like to prepare them with lemon, parsley, feta cheese and pasta.  The leaves are also edible and make a decent (not excellent, but pretty good) pesto.

Unlike most beans, favas prefer cool weather.  In mild-to-cold winter climates, plant favas in the fall.  They’ll sprout in the fall, and grow slowly through the winter before they really take off in early spring.  In very cold winter climates, plant as soon as soil can be worked, well before the last frost.  They’re cold hardy down to 21F.  Direct sow about 10” apart, as they grow into big plants!

The flowers make an excellent early-season nectar source for pollinators.

Leave a few bean pods to fully mature and dry to save seed for next year.
